However, this album proves to be more upbeat and exciting than expected, and is certainly not the same as any other work, standing alone in its uniqueness. In addition to just this one example, the Enigma’s sound in general is as close to Delerium as any other musical group out there. One striking example of this similarity is from Enigma’s “Sadness Part 1.” The chant that begins the first three seconds of this song will remind listeners of the opening to Delerium’s “Silence.” But then the chants abruptly give way to a persistent drum line that is reminiscent of Delerium’s “Euphoria,” also off their album Karma. Those who are familiar with the work of Delerium will find Enigma's work to be in much the same style. The mix among these sounds stays throughout the rest of the song. After about a minute, chants pick up in the background, and a few seconds later subtle whispers begin to reverberate. The song begins with slow-paced vocals from Ruth Ann-Boyle that could even pass off as being the basis for a more mainstream tune. “Gravity of Love,” is a great example of portraying Cretu’s skill at merging these sounds. Chants, quiet instrumental sounds, electronic beats, and a distinctive pop-sound accurately describe the variety of sounds that can be heard on the album, or even in just one Enigma song. The songs spread out among a wide range of tastes. In general, however, most of the songs do not extensively use vocals. This spirit truly makes ‘ENIGMA: Intermission 2’ closer to a full new studio album than to a mere compilation. The sweeping melodic power metal grandeur of Stratovarius, together with Timo Kotipelto’s powerful yet emotional voice, is very much present on all of the 80 minutes of this release. Or indeed ‘Kill it with Fire’ and ‘Castaway’, two epic and full blown power metal tracks that were previously only heard by Japanese fans. Both combine an epic melody with a bombastic chorus and heavy riffs for Stratovarius’ trademark sound and remind listeners of ‘Unbreakable’ from their 2013 album ‘Nemesis’, the most streamed song in the band’s history. With over 30 minutes of brand new material and 50 minutes of previously rare metal, ‘ENIGMA: Intermission 2’ is definitely more killer than filler! Take ‘Enigma’ and ‘Oblivion’ for example, fresh from the studio in 2018. The album is similar in concept to ‘Intermission’, released 17 years ago between ‘Infinite’ and ‘Elements’ the sense that these seven tracks made in 2018 are completed by nine very rare, very hard to find power metal gems. ‘ENIGMA: Intermission 2’ features three brand new songs as well as, for the first time in the band’s history, four beautifully arranged orchestral versions of popular Stratovarius songs. Stratovarius, the top name in the melodic power metal scene, are back with a new album – with some fresh and some very rare material!
